Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy Is the study and science of movement and movement related pathologies. It assists people to restore, maintain and maximize their physical function and movement. Therapists specialize in hands-on clinical skills to assess, differentiate and treat causes of injury and disability, while minimizing symptoms.

Intramuscular Stimulation/Dry Needling

A treatment modality aimed at reducing the irritability of a nerve supplying a specific muscle(s), resulting in a decrease of muscle tone and pain. IMS/DN directly treats muscle tissue, which ultimately results in the reduction of muscle tone and tension. The treatment involves dry needling of proximal(local) and distally(remote) affected areas of the body. Ultimately, it is the heightened activity of the neuromuscular loop which creates the increased tone/muscle tightness and therefore the nervous system is indirectly treated by IMS/DN. Penetration of normal muscle tissue is painless; however, sensitized muscle tissue will give the sense of grasping the needle in what can be described as a cramping sensation.

(The needle sites are the epicenter of taut, tender muscle bands, or locally near the spine where the nerve root originates. The result is threefold. One, a stretch receptor in the muscle is stimulated, producing a reflex relaxation (lengthening). Two, stimulates increased blood flow to the area, aiding in the natural healing process. Three, the treatment creates an electrical potential in the muscle which restores normal levels of the nerve function.)

Anatomical Acupuncture

Is the biomedical adaptation of Chinese acupuncture methods and an effective treatment approach based on current concepts of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and pathophysiology. Points that are relevant to the condition are selected for needling. Anatomical acupuncture involves insertion of solid needles in combination with manual needle stimulation or electrical stimulation.

Personalized Exercise Prescription

A program or exercise(s) designed and tailored to your specific rehabilitation needs and goals that are based on your current abilities; as assessed by your therapist.

Custom Splinting and Bracing

A type of medical device that is designed to support and stabilize different joints of the body. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions and injuries, including sports injuries, arthritis and post operative conditions.

Companies we work with: Breg, DJ Global, Ossur

Manual Therapy

A specific aspect of physiotherapy for the management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, based on clinical reasoning, utilizing specific treatment approaches including manual examination and treatment techniques integrated with therapeutic exercise, patient education and other physical modalities. For example, joint mobilization or manipulation. Orthopaedic manual therapy encompasses, and is driven by, the available scientific and clinical evidence as well as the biopsychosocial framework of each individual patient.

Extracorporeal
Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave works by the emission of acoustic waves (shockwaves) that carry energy and can propagate through tissues. Shockwaves can generate interstitial and extracellular responses, producing effects such as: pain relief, vascularization, cell proliferation and disruption of calcium deposits. The combination of these effects can lead to tissue regeneration and decreased pain, improving functional outcomes in musculoskeletal tissue.

Common Conditions Treated:

  • Tendinopathy

  • Scar Tissue

  • Plantar Fasciopathy

Clinical Pilates with Johanna

With a foundation in the traditional tenants of Pilates: posture, balance, core control, strength, mobility and breath. Clinical Pilates is used in conjunction with Physiotherapy as a means of rehabilitation and injury prevention. It utilizes equipment such as reformers and flat tables, along side floor and mat based exercise.

The Physiotherapist will carry out a detailed subjective and orthopedic based assessment to establish a treatment plan and introduce the basic fundamentals of the Pilates during goal oriented 1:1 Pilates sessions.

Strength & Conditioning Coaching

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) are professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance. These professionals conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement effective strength training and conditioning programs while providing guidance regarding the management and maintenance of physical training during the rehabilitation process through consultation and direction from appropriate healthcare professionals.

To obtain the CSCS certification, candidates must hold at minimum, a Bachelors degree from an accredited university, or be enrolled in the final year of an accredited Bachelors program. A CSCS has successfully completed, a certification exam administered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association regarding exercise science, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, bioenergetics and metabolism, nutritional factors affecting health and performance, and psychology.

Therefore, you want to ensure your physical training plan is designed by a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist to ensure your training efforts and sacrifices maximize your physical potential!
